It was with great pleasure that The Solent Steam Packet Ltd. announced that they had been awarded a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund for £279,500, which was spent on the classic steamship “Shieldhall”.

This statement was issued at the time:

"This grant will be used to continue the restoration work to this historic vessel to enable it to remain in an operational state for many years to come, enabling young and old to experience the days of steam, at sea. “Shieldhall” is operated and maintained entirely by unpaid volunteers and is listed in the Core Collection of the nation’s historic ships. After a working for Glasgow Corporation and Southern Water for a total of 30 years, this classic ship was rescued from the scrapyard by enthusiastic volunteers and since 1988, “Shieldhall” has visited The Netherlands as well as featuring in television and cinema productions. Something that was never anticipated when she was first designed. As a steamship, “Shieldhall” is one of the very few vessels in the world with twin screws, propelled by steam."

Said Honorary Chairman, Barry Eagles, “This grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund represents true recognition of the tremendous amount of effort that our volunteers have put in since 1988, to keep “Shieldhall” operational. It will help to ensure that future generations can experience a living steamship at first hand”.
