It is with great
pleasure that The Solent Steam Packet Ltd; announce that they have been
awarded a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund for £279,500, which will be
spent on the classic steamship “Shieldhall”.
This grant will be used
to continue the restoration work to this historic vessel to enable it to
remain in an operational state for many years to come, enabling young and
old to experience the days of steam, at sea. “Shieldhall” is operated and
maintained entirely by unpaid volunteers and is listed in the Core
Collection of the nation’s historic ships. After a working for Glasgow
Corporation and Southern Water for a total of 30 years, this classic ship
was rescued from the scrapyard by enthusiastic volunteers and since 1988,
“Shieldhall” has visited The Netherlands as well as featuring in television
and cinema productions. Something that was never anticipated when she was
first designed. As a steamship, “Shieldhall” is one of the very few vessels
in the world with twin screws, propelled by steam
Says Honorary Chairman,
Barry Eagles, “This grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund represents true
recognition of the tremendous amount of effort that our volunteers have put
in since 1988, to keep “Shieldhall” operational. It will help to ensure that
future generations can experience a living steamship at first hand”.
“Shieldhall” is based in
Southampton and has enjoyed the support of Associated British Ports,
Hampshire County Council and Southampton City Council over many years. Last
year, “Shieldhall” took her place in the Fleet Review, off Spithead and then
returned to the city of her birth, Glasgow. These were fitting testaments to
this remarkable vessel.
New members and volunteer
workers are always welcome. They will get the satisfaction of belonging to
an organisation that is held with high regard in the world of maritime
preservation. Regular excursions are also run during the summer months.
Further details regarding
“Shieldhall” or membership can be found by visiting our website at

Welcome aboard.
Graham Mackenzie,
