Eastern Solent Cruise to see 4 cruise ships depart - Sailing from Southampton

Sunday 14th July 2019, 14:00 - 18:00

A perfect way to spend a summer afternoon, on a steamship cruise of the Eastern Solent. Enjoy the sights of the Strawberry Coast before heading eastwards towards Ryde, Bembridge and The Palmerston Forts. Built around Britain in the second half of the 19th century, the Fort’s represent the country’s largest ever defensive building program in peacetime. Ranging from landside small gun positions and bunkers to huge walled forts several acres in size, the defences remained important military structures for almost 100 years after they were built and many on the mainland are still in service today. The defence of Portsmouth was central to these installations and today the evidence of this massive programme can still be seen in and around the Solent.

On your return pass the departing cruise ships Celebrity Silhouette, Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Ventura - always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Shieldhall will depart from Berth 36, The Grain Terminal, in the Eastern Docks, Southampton, SO14 3GG. Please enter via Dock Gate 4. Boarding for the cruise may take place one hour before departure, ie. from 1pm. We request passengers be on board no later than 1.45pm, as the ship will look to leave promptly at 2pm.  Please allow yourself plenty of time to reach Southampton, which will be busier than usual with cruise ships departing from the berths.

Limited courtesy parking will be available close to the ship – please check the following site for up-to-date information before you travel http://www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk/find_us

Look out for Shieldhall parking signs and Shieldhall volunteers when you enter Dock Gate 4. It is possible to drop off passengers who have difficulty in walking close to the ship, but cars must be returned to the Car Park afterwards. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN ANY OF THE SHORT STAY CAR PARKS UNLESS YOU PAY TO DO SO.  THOSE PARKING IN A SHORT STAY CAR PARK AND NOT PAYING WILL INCUR A PARKING FINE.

Please bring your ticket for check-in at the gangway with the Purser (you will have received this immediately following your booking).

Once on board, tea, coffee, soft drinks, wine and a range of bottled beers / real ale (including Flack Manor Double-Drop) may be purchased. Hot food, including bacon baps, homemade vegetable soup and quiche, plus cakes (including delicious Caymana Rum Cakes!), New Forest Ice Cream and a range of crisps and confectionery will also be available. You are welcome to bring picnics on board (no alcohol) but please note that use of the Saloon for dining is only for guests who purchase food from the Galley. The Shieldhall Gift Shop will be open with a new line of souvenirs. The Engine Room, Boiler Room and Bridge will all be open for inspection once underway.

During your cruise we will pass close to the departing cruise ships Celebrity Silhouette, Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Ventura. Expect much tooting of whistles and sounding of sirens as the ships acknowledge one another in time-honoured fashion!

Our return to port time is indicative only and whilst we are unlikely to vary much from the times shown, circumstances may mean we have to return slightly earlier or later at the request of the Harbour Master.
